A Study on Labyrinths

Research | Booklet | Virtual 3D Labyrinth | Dortmund 2022

After developing an enigmatic navigation for the interactive video „Im Trug der Schwelle“, I researched on the formal principles of labyrinths with a particular focus on its forms of movement that direct the attention of a subject towards their spatial surroundings. Drawing on various theories, walking through the labyrinth is compared to exploring an unfamiliar city.

In order to develop a digital labyrinth model wax casts were created and later scanned with photogrammetric methods and 3D technologies. The model can be explored virtually and
follows the design principles of the Cretan labyrinth. It is a long, winding path with no branches. However, based on the concept of “Im Trug der Schwelle”,  there is no centre in this labyrinth – meaning there is no destination. The visitors are trapped in an endless cycle.

Sounds with distance attenuation are placed at various locations. As they walk through the labyrinth, the visitors are repeatedly made aware of their proximity to and distance from a sound source and the associated supposed destination.
